The Pedissert - Vol. 8 - "Healthy Sleep Tips? With Sleepy Mandy"

Is Pedissert participation a pyramid scheme?

Maybe…

For those of you who watched Vol. 7 with Julia, she was referred by Liz from Vol. 6. While Julia was getting cleaned up, she mentioned her friend Amanda might be interested and gave me her phone number.

I texted Amanda about this weird thing and if she would be interested. She was and said it “wasn’t weird at all.”

Amanda then told me she has sleep issues, but made sure she would take enough caffeine and stimulants to not fall asleep during the shoot… and an idea was born.

What if we planned to give you tips on how to sleep better, but she was asleep during the whole thing? Instead of giving you ten healthy sleep tips, I just smushed ten cream pies into Sleepy Mandy’s feet without her noticing… at least until she “woke up” at the end.

For the pie colors, I went with soft pastels that are supposed to promote sleep. In this case, it was pastel blue, pastel green, pink, and white. The result gave off a slight softer vibe of those “Jazz cups” from the 1990s. A good bit of crust also stuck around.

I also tried something new this go-round: I whipped my own cream instead of buying tubs of Cool Whip. I found out about a food service store in town, and went to check it out. They had 10-inch pie crusts you could bake, as well as Rich’s Non-Dairy Whip Topping that you could whip up yourself. The prices were also very competitive, and as someone on a budget, why not save money and make a better product?

It was actually a lot quicker to mix everything together. In addition to the cold whipped topping in a cold bowl, I added a small amount of instant pudding, as well as gel food coloring, before starting the electric whisking. It came together pretty quick, but in hindsight, I probably could have beat a little more air into it and made it even more fluffy. I had previously tried larger amounts of instant pudding mix with Amber’s Pi Day shoot (Vol. 5), but that was so sticky that the crust would pull the cream off. In this shoot, the smaller amount of instant pudding mix provided stickiness, but still would pull of a little bit with falling crust. I may skip using instant pudding as a binder going forward. In fact, I may not use anything other than straight non-dairy whipped topping that I can whip up myself! The coloring was also even and more vibrant than before.

In regards to documenting everything, I tried a different lens on the phone camera to see if I could improve my “bokeh” style. In retrospect, it gave slightly better focus, but at a cost of detail. While these shots are still great, there’s not as much detail as previous shoots.

Mandy and I had a lot of fun, despite her “sleeping” through all of this. Check out the photos and video below!
