The Pedissert - Vol. 5- "Amber's Pi Day Preparation"

Before I delve into this volume, I wanted to share a serious little life update: while I had self-diagnosed myself with autism for a while, I finally had the chance to get an autism assessment, and I was diagnosed with ASD Level 1. This essentially means I can get by in life with minimal support, but you can tell I awkwardly struggle to read people, and I’m also a bit fidgety.

It’s a mixed bag: it’s a relief to know that I’m autistic, but it’s definitely something I wish I knew earlier in life. When I was younger, I struggled to fit in. I was bullied heavily. I got crap from teachers and parents for not being mature enough. It’s something I’ve had to work through, but there are things I know I’ll never be able to socially recover from as a result.

But enough about that.

Today is March 14th, colloquially known as “Pi Day.” While it celebrates the mathematical symbol and sixteenth letter of the Greek alphabet, businesses are also advertising deals on pizzas, and there are pie-in-the-face fundraisers happening everywhere.

As you know, we do things a little differently here.

Viewers, as well as previous participants, have suggested that I should do a “Pi Day Pedissert” as one of the planned 100. It is definitely an appropriate holiday, so you know that whoever took part, we would have to pie her feet with some special “π Pies!” Most importantly, we had to make it educational, but fun!

I posted a casting call, where someone freaked out and tried to compare me to Ghislane Maxwell (because she thought I was a woman for some reason!) The post was quickly taken down, but not before Amber reached out to indicate her interest. Amber also does clowning on the side, and if she’s interested, I have some sketches in mind where a clown can be very useful.

I tried something different for the “π Pies”; while I usually mix frosting into the Cool Whip, I tried instant vanilla pudding this time. The goal was to make more of a “fluff.” The colors chosen were purple (which represents the #DressForSTEM campaign, which encourages people to wear purple to promote STEM careers, especially among women), orange (the signature color in Yann Martel’s book Life of Pi), and green (just because it color-coordinated with the others!), and some regular white Cool Whip. I also drew π symbols in black icing on to each pie to make a true “π Pie.”

This is the first Pedissert volume with an actual storyline behind it; I created a little quiz about π; not only math-related questions, but pop-culture ones as well (along with a few “dad jokes”.) For those of you wondering, the quiz was not rigged. It wouldn’t have mattered if it was, because the result was the same whether Amber got the questions right or wrong – her feet would get pied regardless.

Everything was set to go for shoot day, but then the norovirus reared its ugly head. We had to postpone the shoot for a week, because vomit and diarrhea is never fun.

A week later, we shot the video. Amber was a lot of fun to work with, and she knew how to play to the camera in the bizarre fashion I crave. The only issue was the pie recipe sitting in the freezer due to the delay; it stuck so well to the crust, but not that great to her feet. We were going to make it work, though; Amber enjoyed squishing her feet around in the mess between scenes, and after the last pie, I picked up mounds of mess to smoosh on to her feet. The resulting texture and color makes it look like some really good flower that you could smoke.

I’m probably going to go back to the original recipe for the next Pedissert volume, but I am curious how this recipe would work if it hadn’t been in the freezer for a week. As it was, it was very sticky and hard to clean up – I just wonder if it would have been more sticky and fluffy when “painting.” Maybe this is something I can try again down the road?

Happy Pi Day, and check out the photos and video below!
